Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam

Born on 15th October 1931 at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, popularly known as Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the son of a little educated boat-owner, became the 11th President of the Republic of India.

Dr. Kalam states that despite of not much wealth and not very educative parents he had a secured childhood both materially and emotionally, from his parents he gained innate wisdom, a spirit of generosity and a inspiration to help people around. During his childhood he lived in his ancestral home, built in the 19th century, the family avoided all inessential comforts and luxuries and preferred to lead a humble life.

Professor C N R Rao

When Prof. C N R Rao received the prestigious 2005 Dan David Prize for material science on May 23, 2005, he made India proud. This is the highest honour an Indian scientist has received in the last 70 years since C V Raman’s Nobel Prize. The Dan David Foundation, Tel Aviv University annually recognizes achievements that impact the world. Prof. Rao received this award for materials science in the Future Time Dimensions. He shares the million dollar award with Robert Langer of MIT and George Whitesides of Harvard University.

Coming from a humble background, Prof. Rao has over fifty years of research behind him and awards galore. He has been awarded Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan by the President of India (in 1974 and 1985 respectively) recognizing his overall contributions to science. Karnataka Ratna, the highest honour of the State of Karnataka was conferred upon him in 2001.
